CLEP exams

The College-Level Examination Program gives Virginia Commonwealth University undergraduate students the opportunity to earn college credits through a series of exams.

Regulations

CLEP credit is awarded only to students who are fully accepted into a VCU degree program.

Do not take a CLEP exam if it duplicates all or part of any VCU courses that you have already completed or enrolled in for credit. This includes courses you may have withdrawn from. For further information on this policy, contact the dean’s office in the school of your major.

Once you’ve earned CLEP exam credit, you may not take a VCU course for credit that duplicates the previously earned CLEP credit.

You may earn a maximum of 54 credits through CLEP. We recommend that you seek pre-approval from your department or school prior to taking the exam.

Fees

The CLEP testing fee is $95, plus the Campus Testing Center administration fee of $25. Separate payments are required for each CLEP exam and test proctoring.

The CLEP fee must be paid directly through the CLEP website, and you will need to bring your test voucher on the day of the test.

The test administration fee should be paid at the testing center on the day of the test. The fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable. Only check or money order payments are accepted.

Registration

Contact the testing center at (804) 827-8108 or clc@vcu.edu to schedule your CLEP exam. To cancel or reschedule, contact the testing center at least 48 hours prior to your appointment.

Accommodations for students with disabilities will be made in accordance with CLEP guidelines.

On the day of your exam, you must provide:

  • A photo ID
