Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)
Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is a peer-assisted study session designed to assist students in courses that have proven difficult.
PASS leaders have previously completed the course and are trained to facilitate group learning and assist students in learning strategies and concepts that help them in their classes. PASS leaders attend the current class, take notes, talk with the professor and read the text. They then conduct three PASS sessions each week, which are open to all students in the class.
What to expect
- Attendance is voluntary. Attend the sessions that fit your schedule.
- Sessions are free. Just show up at the sessions with your textbook and notes, and sign your name on the sign-in sheet.
- PASS saves you time. Students say that one hour of guided study time with an experienced leader is equal to two to three hours of trying to “get it” on your own. Also, you’ll get great study tips from the PASS leader and your classmates.
- PASS can help your grades. Students who attend PASS sessions on a regular basis usually earn a half to whole letter grade higher than students who do not attend. And those who attend have a better understanding of the course content.
- Sessions do fill. Sessions just before exams, or “marathons” do often fill to our 30-person capacity. Please be aware we cannot exceed that 30 person limit.
- PASS is not a substitute for class attendance. PASS works best with regular class attendance. We are unable to provide you with class notes or replicate your professor’s lecture.
